How can your ancestors double with every generation?  Eventually you arrive at a time when you have more ancestors than there could have been people in the world and everyone knows we originated with just one couple, ancestral Adam and Eve.  The answer to this puzzle is called Pedigree Collapse, which occurs when kissing cousins marry.  Here is a link to a straight dope article written by Cecil Adams explaining this phenomenon.
