Up to and including the year 1751, England and its colonies considered the new year to begin on March 25, not January 1. This is called the Julian or Old Style calendar. In 1752, the Gregorian calendar was adopted so December 31, 1751 was followed by January 1, 1752. Under the Julian calendar, it would have been January 1, 1751.
