Fishermen dredging the bottom of the North Sea have recovered a fragment from the front of a skull belonging to a young Neanderthal male. Analysis of chemical isotopes suggest the fossil is 60,000 years old. It is thought that Neanderthals were our close evolutionary cousins and they first appear in the fossil record about 400,000 years ago.
